The first designer to collaborate with Net-a-Porter on a range of luxury board games, Alexandra has created a collection of three unique designs for the British e-tailer inspired by the grace and elegance of the butterfly, one of her most cherished motifs. This intricate wood marquetry backgammon board is accompanied by a vibrant photographic backgammon board and a portable travel backgammon set.
Growing up in the English countryside, Alexandra was fascinated by the butterfly’s mesmerising beauty from a very young age. Her artistic depictions of these captivating creatures have appeared on a best-selling backgammon set, a chessboard and, now, this exquisite wood marquetry backgammon board.
Rendered in contrasting sycamore and walnut burr woods, the perfectly symmetrical wings of a Malayan tree nymph butterfly spread across the entire board. The marquetry artist recreates the “trompe l’oeil” effect in Alexandra’s design using the hot sand shading technique, scorching the woods to bring a beautiful sense of three-dimensionality and lifelike volume to the butterfly’s wings.
Inlaid into the midnight-blue playing surface, chevron marquetry triangles alternate with black triangles that are designed to disappear behind the wings, adding to the illusion of depth.
Our Black and White Marquetry Butterfly backgammon set is presented with luxurious semi-precious playing pieces in vivid turquoise and shimmering mother of pearl, chosen by Alexandra because it mimics the glittering iridescence of a butterfly’s wings.
